9 Tricks to Get Flooded with Messages (On Facebook Marketplace)

Many people struggle with selling on Facebook Marketplace because they don’t know how to list items effectively.
Minimal interest from buyers can be frustrating, leaving items sitting for weeks.

In this article, I’ll share 9 proven tips to flood your Facebook Marketplace inbox with messages, helping you sell faster, attract eager buyers, and maximize your profits.

I’m Martin, a former 9-5 worker who quit the rat race to flip items full-time. These are the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

1. Price Baiting – Sell Multiple Items Quickly

Price Baiting is a simple but powerful way to sell multiple similar items fast. The idea is to draw buyers in with an attractive low price while showing the full set of items in your listing.

Example:
I once struggled to sell 10 pots for $60. After weeks with no inquiries, I changed the approach:

  • Main photo featured the nicest pot.
  • Additional photos showed the other pots.
  • Price was set for the cheapest pot, with a breakdown in the description.

This approach attracted more clicks, boosted my listing’s rank, and resulted in selling 7 of 10 pots for $100 within a week.

Pro Tip

Price Baiting works best for multiple-item listings, not single items.

2. SHEL – Start High, End Low

Most beginners price items by copying competitors, but Facebook Marketplace is local, so a different approach works better.

SHEL (Start High, End Low) involves:

  1. Listing your item above market value.
  2. Monitoring interest (clicks, messages, shares).
  3. Gradually reducing the price if it doesn’t sell.

Why it works:

  • A low price can signal poor quality.
  • Starting high lets you test demand and maximize profits.

Example: If similar tables sell for $70, list yours at $100 and adjust based on response.

3. Use the Crop Tool

Photos are the first thing buyers notice. Poorly cropped images can lose attention instantly.

Facebook crops images automatically, which can cut out key details. Use the crop tool to:

  • Resize to square
  • Center your item clearly
  • Ensure no important part gets cut off

Well-framed images immediately attract more clicks.

4. Take Appropriate Pictures

A mismatched background can make even high-quality items look unappealing.

Do not:

  • Put a fridge in a shed
  • Lay clothes on dirt
  • Place a sandwich on a toilet

Do:

  • Use a clean, relevant background that tells a story about the item
  • Make your item look like it belongs in its environment

5. Play with the Angles

One photo rarely sells an item. Take multiple shots from different angles to show buyers every detail.

Think of it as a numbers game:

  • One photo → low chance of impressing
  • 10–12 photos → high chance at least one stands out

Keep the best photos and delete the rest. More angles = more trust = more sales.

6. Precise Title

The title is your first opportunity to grab attention. Be precise and include search-friendly keywords.

Example for a fridge

[Brand] [Volume] Fridge Freezer [Model] – Delivery Available

Clear titles increase clicks and improve ranking in searches.

7. Write Descriptive Descriptions

A great description builds trust and answers questions before buyers ask. Include:

  • What the item is and why it’s valuable
  • Technical details (dimensions, weight, material, color)
  • Any flaws (scratches, dents, missing parts)

Transparency builds credibility and makes buyers more comfortable reaching out.

8. End on a High Note (+ CTA)

After disclosing flaws, finish with positives. Highlight the item’s best features and add a call-to-action (CTA).

Example:

Excellent condition, works perfectly, located in [Suburb]. Questions? Send me a message!

Positive endings encourage action and keep your listing friendly and approachable.

9. Use Keywords Strategically

Facebook Marketplace ranks listings based on keywords. Include:

  • Multiple variations of your item
  • Descriptive terms naturally in your description

Example for a fridge:

  • Refrigerator, Freezer, Fridge

The more relevant keywords, the higher your listing appears in searches.
